EMPATHY – A VALUE WE OUGHT TO IMBIBE
Empathy is a term often neglected in our society. A simple virtue which can be the solution to a lot of stressful situations, relationship issues and anything that spells trouble.
As a
concept, empathy is nowhere similar to sympathy. When we look at someone with
sympathy, we establish a passive connection and often pity the person
concerned. On the other hand, when we empathize, we try to get into the
person’s shoes and make an active attempt to understand that person.
Empathy
enables us to develop and strengthen our social connections with others. Our
ability to understand what people are thinking and feeling assists us in responding effectively in social situations.
Being able to empathize makes it easy for us to maintain equanimity of mind. It
becomes easier for us to regulate our emotions, the moment we can see things
from the other person’s perspective. This helps us in avoiding stress and
getting overwhelmed.
People who
have empathy tend to be socially responsible and helpful. This strengthens
human relationships and paves the way to a nearly Utopian society. It is a
wellness creator which helps reduce stress and negativity, which is conducive
to a healthy body and mind. This leads to a happier and fulfilled life. In the
workplace, empathy encourages teamwork and promotes a healthy work environment.
It lays the foundation of deep motivation, connection and accountability
towards one’s responsibilities and the organization at large.
As said by
the American philosopher Martha Nussbaum, “The human capacity of empathy is a
defining factor for the success of the human race.” In a cosmopolitan society
of today, empathy is an important skill that would enable a harmonious
existence. It is vital to acquire cultural knowledge and compassion as well as
inculcate the habit of reflecting on one’s values and attitudes. The whole
concept is about developing self-awareness. If we do not have a complete understanding
about ourselves, it is impossible to see things from someone else’s
perspective.
It is
advisable to introduce this practice at an early stage. Childhood is the best
stage when this virtue needs to be instilled in the young minds. The earlier a child
is taught the value of mutual respect, compassion and a caring attitude towards
others, the more are the possibilities of them growing into empathetic
individuals. Empathy is gradually instilled in kids through all the daily
activities they indulge in. An environment should be created in a manner that
promotes empathy. Both teachers and parents have to be role models in this
scenario. They have to exhibit empathy in their in their speech, mannerisms and
behaviors. A highly supportive and nourishing ambience would encourage
children to absorb these values.
The need of
the hour in the present time, is to lay emphasis in fostering this precious
virtue among growing kids so as to pave the way towards a harmonious and
peaceful society. The adult population should be equally made aware of being
empathetic in their personal and
professional relationships. Empathy is the only panacea to the tensions and
troubles our society faces at this present hour.
