In the world of Overseas Education, Germany is rapidly emerging as a much sought after study destination due to its world class education, specially by students with a STEM background. (This was highlighted by the India Today Education Desk in its news update, dated October 18, 2024). This sudden rise in preference among the students is backed by some valid reasons. Though it is a desired place for pursuing higher education by students of the surrounding European countries, but also of several other nations. In this blog, we would focus on the rising trend among Indian students choosing this destination over the past five years and the reasons behind this conspicuous surge. The key factors that have served as
a driving force behind elevating Germany to the one of the most favoured
nations, specially for STEM programs can be enumerated below:
1) High Standards of Education – Germany is
renowned for its top-ranking Universities, known for their academic excellence
and pioneering research initiatives. Most of the Universities of Applied
Sciences offer programs that blend theory with hands on learning, giving the
students enough scope to acquire practical skills that employers in the current
scenario demand.
There are famous public universities
like the Technical University of Munich, RWTH Aachen University, Technical
University of Berlin etc., that are globally recognized, especially in
Engineering, Technology and Natural Sciences. Several private universities are
also increasingly becoming popular among Indian as well as International
students for their specialized courses with faculties who are industry experts.
The curriculum is practice oriented; emphasis is given on research driven
innovation, offering opportunities to students to work on groundbreaking
projects. Such an approach is conducive to effectively preparing the graduates
for the global job market, giving them a competitive edge.
2) Affordability - This is one of the most attractive factor for
international students with regard to German Universities. Major public
universities charge a little or no tuition fees at all, depending on the
fulfillment of certain criteria. The students are left with only the
accommodation and other basic miscellaneous expenses that they need to manage.
It is observed that
when we talk about study abroad, the primary concern is the exorbitant tuition
fees. A relaxation in this is always more than welcome. The cost of
accommodation in Germany is much less in comparison to other western countries.
International students who would like to seek financial assistance can choose
from a range of scholarships offered by organizations like DAAD (German
Academic Exchange Service), that would ease their financial burden.
3) A plethora of career options – Universities
in Germany have partnerships with several industries, enabling students to get
internships and job opportunities while pursuing their graduation and after
they complete their studies. Industries conduct workshops to give valuable
information and knowledge about specific skills that would be required to get
placements in future. Such practical exposure goes a long way in giving deep
insights to students regarding industrial knowledge.
4) Safe and secure environment –
Germany is a country which offers a friendly, vibrant and multicultural
environment to its student fraternity. The cities are safe and have very
effective public transport and healthcare facilities. The climatic conditions are
quite favorable and the breathtaking landscapes of the country make living very
pleasant and convenient.
Overall, Germany stands out as a
highly favorable destination for international students with a single factor
that may be a bit of a challenge for a few. It has to be noted here that the
public universities offer relaxation on the tuition fees depending on the level
of German language proficiency certifications completed by the students.
